Icon images worshipped by Christians were resisted by Constantine V, the Byzantine emperor, during his reign. He felt that the veneration of icons was idolatrous and that it distracted people from worshipping God. He ordered all icons to be destroyed and initiated a period of iconoclasm, which lasted until the reign of Irene of Athens.
