Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan, became a part of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) when Barys Astana, a professional ice hockey team based in Nur-Sultan, joined the league in 2008. The team was initially known as Barys Astana before relocating to Almaty in 2015 and changing its name to Barys Almaty.
