Kostas Georgakis, a Greek painter and poet, committed suicide by self-immolation in 1968. He set himself on fire in front of the Greek Parliament in protest against the military junta that had seized power in Greece in 1967. Georgakis's death was a major event in the Greek resistance to the junta and is commemorated every year on 21 April.
