Kurt Alder was born in 1902. He was a German chemist who, along with Otto Diels, developed the Diels-Alder reaction, a chemical reaction that forms cyclic compounds from a conjugated diene and a dienophile. For this work, they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1950.
