Kyriakos S. Pittakis was born on July 12, 1798 in the village of Kalo Chorio, in the island of Crete, which was then under the control of the Ottoman Empire. He was a Greek polymath, linguist, writer, and historian. He is considered to be the father of the modern Cretan literature.
