The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) selected Zamenhof as one of its eminent personalities in 2017, in recognition of his work on Esperanto. Zamenhof was a Polish ophthalmologist who created Esperanto in 1887 as a universal language that would be easy to learn and would help to promote international understanding. Esperanto is now spoken by an estimated 2 million people worldwide.
