Lachlan Macquarie was born in Scotland and joined the British Army at the age of 15. He served in the Seven Years' War and the Napoleonic Wars, and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He was appointed Governor of New South Wales in 1810, and served in that role until 1821.
