In 1816, Governor Lachlan Macquarie gave orders that led to the Appin Massacre, which took place on June 29, 1816. Macquarie ordered Captain James Campbell to attack a group of Aboriginal people who were accused of murdering a white farmer named John Macarthur. Campbell's men killed at least 28 Aboriginal people, including women and children.
