Edward Wortley Montagu was an English diplomat who served as ambassador to Turkey from 1716 to 1718. His wife, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, accompanied him on his diplomatic mission and wrote extensively about her experiences in Turkey, including her observations on the role of women in Ottoman society.
