Lai Ching-te was first elected as a legislator in Taiwan in 1996. He served in this role for two terms, until 2000. During his time in the legislature, he made a name for himself as an advocate for social justice and human rights. He also played a key role in the Democratic Progressive Party's efforts to promote Taiwan's independence from China.
