Lam Wing-kee was especially influential in China. He was born in Hong Kong and became a pro-democracy activist in his youth. In 1984, he was arrested for participating in a protest against the Sino-British Joint Declaration, which agreed to hand Hong Kong over to China in 1997. Lam was imprisoned for five years and upon his release, he fled to the United States.
