Lana Turner was born in Wallace, Idaho, on February 8, 1921. Her mother, Mildred Frances Cowan, was a showgirl, and her father, John Virgil Turner, was a salesman. Turner was raised in Boise, Idaho, and attended the Boise High School. After graduating from high school, she moved to Hollywood, California, to pursue a career in acting.
