Joseph Paul Franklin, a notorious white supremacist, attempted to assassinate Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine, on March 6, 1993. Franklin, motivated by his extreme ideology and opposition to Flynt's publications, shot Flynt outside of his Georgia office. Although Flynt survived the attack, he was left permanently paralyzed from the waist down. The attempted assassination sparked outrage and highlighted the dangers faced by those expressing controversial viewpoints.
