Answer
The Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo (AFDL), led by Laurent-Désiré Kabila, emerged as a significant rebel force in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the late 1990s. Formed mainly out of eastern-based militias and backed by neighbouring countries, the AFDL aimed to overthrow the regime of President Mobutu Sese Seko, who had been in power for over three decades.
