The death of Laurent-Désiré Kabila, Then president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was a result of an assassination attempt. The incident occurred on 16 January 2001, while Kabila was chairing a cabinet meeting in the capital city of Kinshasa. A lone gunman, identified as Rashidi Kasereka, shot Kabila multiple times at close range. Kabila succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to a hospital.
