Tung was assassinated along with both Nhu and Diệm during the November 1963 coup. Tung was the former head of the South Vietnamese National Police, and Nhu was the younger brother and chief political advisor of Diệm, the President of South Vietnam. The coup was led by a group of South Vietnamese generals who were opposed to Diệm's rule. The coup was successful, and Diệm and Nhu were both killed.
