Bronisław Komorowski succeeded Kaczyński as the President of Poland following the tragic plane crash near Smolensk, which claimed the lives of Kaczyński and many other senior Polish government officials in April 2010. Komorowski, who had been serving as the Speaker of the Sejm at the time, was the most senior surviving official in the line of succession and was sworn in as acting president according to the Polish constitution.
