Pope Leo IX, originally known as Bruno von Egisheim-Dagsburg, was born into a noble family in Alsace, in present-day France or Germany. As a young man, he pursued an ecclesiastical career, rising through the ranks of the clergy before being elected as Bishop of Toul in 1026.
