Social justice was a central theme of Pope Leo XIII's papacy. He believed that the Church had a responsibility to address the social and economic problems of the time, particularly the plight of the working class. In his encyclical Rerum Novarum (1891), Leo XIII called for a just wage, reasonable working hours, and the right to form labor unions.
