McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition, a world's fair held in Buffalo, New York, on September 6, 1901. The assassin, Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist, shot McKinley at close range while he was greeting visitors at the Temple of Music building. McKinley died eight days later from complications of the wounds.
