Leonid Vitaliyevich Kantorovich was born on 19 January 1912 in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire. He was a Soviet mathematician and economist who won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1975 for his work in operations research, especially linear programming and game theory. He also made important contributions to Theory of functional analysis and measure theory.
