Alfonso XII was the son of Isabella II and her husband, Francisco de Asís de Borbón. He was born in Madrid on October 28, 1857, and was the only child of the couple to survive to adulthood. Alfonso succeeded his mother on the Spanish throne when she was deposed in 1868. He ruled until his death in 1885, and was succeeded by his son, Alfonso XIII.
