Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, was a significant patron of music and his court in Vienna was a center of musical activity. He was particularly fond of Italian opera and commissioned a number of works from leading composers of the day, including Claudio Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli, and Antonio Vivaldi.
