Ružička was born in 1887 in Vukovar, Croatia-Slavonia, Austria-Hungary (now Croatia), and died in 1976 in Mammern, Switzerland. He was a Croatian-Swiss chemist and Nobel laureate in Chemistry (1939). He is known for his work on steroids, particularly his synthesis of cholesterol and vitamin D.
