Leopold Ružička was born on 13 September 1887 in Vukovar, Croatia-Slavonia, Austria-Hungary. He was a Croatian-Swiss chemist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939 for his work on carotenoids and vitamins. He was the first person to synthesize vitamin A and the first person to identify lycopene, a pigment found in tomatoes.
