In 1923, Leon Trotsky, Grigory Zinoviev, and Lev Kamenev formed a group called the United Opposition to challenge the leadership of Joseph Stalin. The group argued that Stalin was autocratic and that his policies were harming the Soviet Union. However, the United Opposition was unsuccessful and was defeated by Stalin in 1927.
