Ter-Petrosyan returned to the political scene in 2007 after his resignation. He was a founding father of Armenia and served as its first president from 1991 to 1998. He was forced to resign after a popular uprising over his handling of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. After his resignation, he became a political opposition figure.
