Born in 1844, Lewis Powell was a Confederate soldier and a member of John Wilkes Booth's conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln and other government officials. Powell attacked Secretary of State William H. Seward, seriously injuring him but failing to kill him. After the conspiracy's failure, Powell evaded capture for some time, but was eventually arrested and hanged.
