In 2011, Leymah Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her nonviolent struggle for the safety of women and women's rights to full participation in peace-building work. Along with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Tawakkol Karman, she became one of three women to be jointly awarded that year's prize.
