Answer
Surface Warfare is a specialization in the United States Navy. Surface Warfare Officers (SWOs) are responsible for the operation, maintenance, and combat readiness of Navy surface ships. SWO training includes courses in navigation, seamanship, gunnery, damage control, and shipboard operations. SWO officers are also required to complete a tour of duty on a surface ship before they can be promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander.
