Francisco Franco, the leader of the Nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent dictator of Spain from 1939 to 1975, was the Spanish leader when Lluís Companys was executed. Companys, the president of the autonomous government of Catalonia, was a prominent figure in the Republican camp during the war and was captured and sentenced to death by Franco's regime in October 1940.
