Domènech i Montaner was also passionate about archaeological research. In the 1880s, he helped to excavate the ruins of the Roman city of Empúries, in Girona, and in the 1890s, he led the restoration of the Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll. He also wrote several books on archaeology, including La Civilización Catalana (1886) and Les Arts Decoratives Catalanes (1895).
