Llywelyn the Great was born around the year 1173. He was the son of Gruffudd ap Cynan, who was the ruler of Gwynedd, one of the kingdoms of Wales. Llywelyn succeeded his father as ruler of Gwynedd in 1194 and went on to conquer the other Welsh kingdoms, uniting them under his rule. He was also known as Llywelyn Fawr, which means "Llywelyn the Great" in English.
