Gregg County was named after John Gregg, a Confederate general and Texas politician. Gregg was born in Virginia in 1828 and moved to Texas in 1849. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. After the war, Gregg served as a state senator and as a member of the Texas House of Representatives. He died in 1893.
