Hansberry and her family fought against racial segregation which led to a Supreme Court case. In 1937, the Hansberrys moved into a white-only apartment complex in Chicago. The complex's owners tried to evict them, but the Hansberrys fought back and eventually won their case in the Supreme Court. The case, Hansberry v. Lee, established the right of African Americans to live in any neighborhood they could afford.
