Lothair I was involved in a civil war from 840 to 843. The civil war began when Lothair's father, Louis the Pious, died in 840. Louis had divided his empire among his three sons: Lothair, Charles the Bald, and Pepin the Younger. Lothair was the eldest son and was therefore given the title of Holy Roman Emperor.
