Lothair I was the oldest son of Louis the Pious, the Holy Roman Emperor. Louis had divided his empire between his three sons, Lothair, Charles the Bald, and Pepin. Lothair protested against his younger brothers being given equal shares of the empire, and in 840 he led an army against them.
