Louis tried to get along with the Dutch people, and he was initially popular with them. He spoke Dutch and encouraged his courtiers to do the same. He also supported the Dutch economy, and he allowed them to govern themselves with a great deal of autonomy. However, Louis's attempts to extend French power in the region eventually alienated the Dutch, and they rebelled against him in 1789.
