Louis Bonaparte was born in Corsica, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, on 20 September 1778. He was the fourth son of Carlo Buonaparte, a Corsican nobleman, and Letizia Ramolino, a Corsican woman of peasant origin. Louis's older brother, Napoleon Bonaparte, became Emperor of the French in 1804. Louis served as King of Holland from 1806 to 1810 and King of Spain from 1810 to 1813.
