Louis Riel was a Métis leader who was instrumental in the establishment of the province of Manitoba. He led the Métis in the Red River Rebellion in 1869–70, and negotiated the Manitoba Act of 1870, which created the province. Riel also served as the first premier of Manitoba from 1870 to 1871.
