Louis the Pious was born on April 16, 778. He was the son of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, and his third wife, Hildegard. Louis became king of Aquitaine in 781 and was crowned co-emperor with his father in 813. After Charlemagne's death in 814, Louis became the sole emperor of the Carolingian Empire. He ruled until his death in 840.
