In 2008, Luc Montagnier was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Montagnier and his colleagues Françoise Barré-Sinoussi isolated the virus from a patient with AIDS in 1983. Their work helped to identify the virus and to develop treatments for AIDS.
