Luc Montagnier was a virologist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi in 2008 for their discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). He was born in Chabris, Indre, France, on August 18, 1932. He studied medicine at the University of Paris, where he received his doctorate in 1967.
