Answer

Lucas Neill was named captain of the Australian national team on 6 October 2006. Neill had previously served as vice-captain of the Socceroos, and was handed the captaincy by coach Guus Hiddink following the retirement of Mark Viduka. Neill led the Socceroos to the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, where they finished as runners-up, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
