Answer
Freud became a British naturalized citizen in 1939. This was after he had fled Austria following the Anschluss, the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938. Freud had been a vocal critic of Nazism, and he had been warned by his friends that he was in danger if he remained in Austria. He and his family moved to London, where he continued his work as a psychoanalyst.
