Condemning heretical groups was a major activity that marked the papacy of Lucius III. In 1184, he presided over the Council of Verona, which condemned the Cathars, Waldensians, and other heretical groups. Lucius III also issued a number of decrees against heresy, including the decree Ad abolendam, which ordered the bishops of each diocese to root out heresy in their jurisdictions.
