In World War I, Ludvík Svoboda fought in the Austro-Hungarian army. He was captured by the Russians and joined the Czechoslovak Legion. He fought with the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia and France. After the war, he returned to Czechoslovakia and became a general in the Czechoslovak Army.
