Ludwig III entered Bavarian politics at the age of 18. Born in 1845, he was the eldest son of Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria. Ludwig received a military education and served in the Franco-Prussian War before entering politics. In 1886, he was elected to the Bavarian Landtag, the state parliament, and quickly rose through the ranks.
