As of 2023, Fickell has served as a head coach on two separate occasions. His first stint was as the interim head coach at Ohio State University in 2011, following the resignation of Jim Tressel. He then became the full-time head coach at the University of Cincinnati from 2017 to 2022, leading the Bearcats to unprecedented success, including a College Football Playoff appearance in 2021.
