M. Visvesvaraya was the first engineer-in-chief of the princely state of Mysore from 1902 to 1912, and is considered the maker of modern Mysore. He is credited with bringing in modern technologies to Mysore, and building several public works, including roads, railways, canals, bridges, dams, and public buildings. He also founded the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru in 1909.
